Job Summary
An 811 Utility Locator is responsible for identifying, marking, and documenting the locations of underground utilities (gas, water, sewer, telecommunications, electric, etc. depending on territory) to ensure safe excavation and construction activities. This position requires accuracy, safety awareness, and adherence to industry and company standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Utility Locating:Accurately identify and mark underground utilities using locating devices and equipment provided.
Paint or flag utility lines according to industry (APWA) color codes.
Compliance & Safety:
Follow all state and local regulations, including 811 one-call requirements.
Ensure compliance with company safety policies and OSHA standards.
Communicate potential hazards and risks to team members and contractors.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain detailed and accurate records of utility locations, work performed, and any discrepancies.
Complete and submit reports via electronic devices or paperwork with our ticket managing systems.
Communication:
Interact professionally with contractors, homeowners, and stakeholders.
Answer questions about markings and utility locations as needed.
Equipment Maintenance:
Properly maintain locating equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Troubleshoot and repair minor equipment issues or report major issues to management.
Problem Solving:
Resolve complex locating challenges, such as overlapping utilities, using advanced techniques.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Prior experience in utility locating, construction, or related field preferred.
Technical Skills:
Familiarity with utility locating equipment such as electromagnetic detectors.
Basic knowledge of utility systems and their layouts.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Capable of walking long distances, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Certification in utility locating (e.g., NULCA) is a plus.
Other Skills:
Strong attention to detail and safety protocols.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Work Environment
Outdoor fieldwork in various terrains and weather conditions.
May involve long hours and on-call responsibilities, including evenings and weekends.
Travel within the designated service area.
Needs to be an advocate and promoter of the FISH PHILOSOPHY work culture program.
