Catholic Priest / Chaplain
Associate Coordinator of Catholic Pastoral Services

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Catholic Priest/ Chaplain - Associate Coordinator of Catholic Pastoral Services (“CPC”).  The CPC provides for the pastoral and sacramental needs of the incarcerated Roman Catholics at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA.  The CPC also provides pastoral support and crisis intervention to MSO staff.  The CPC will be required to work a flexible schedule between the hours of 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.  The hours of work and days off are subject to change based on the needs of religious programming and at the discretion of management.  This is an exempt, full time, at-will employment position that reports to the Religious Services Coordinator.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides Catholic religious programming and services to incarcerated individuals in all housing units and across security levels;
  • Provides Sacramental ministry to Catholic incarcerated individuals, maintains appropriate records, and advises MSO staff on religious/spiritual needs;
  • Celebrates Mass on Sundays and other Holidays Days of Obligation;
  • Provides spiritual and grief counseling to incarcerated individuals;
  • Maintains effective communication with the Religious Services Coordinator and   local parishes.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and supports Catholic pastoral volunteers;
  • Collaborates with MSO staff and participates, as asked and available, in programs, services, committees, and other activities;
  • Assumes responsibility for administrative tasks and data reporting as required by the MSO;
  • Attends forty (40) hours of approved training per year; attend quarterly chaplain meetings and institutional clergy meetings;
  • Provides pastoral support and crisis intervention to staff as needed and available;
  • Supports MSO employee and community events by providing invocations and benedictions;
  • Other work duties as assigned by the Religious Services Coordinator, Chief of Treatment & Re-Entry Services, or higher rank.
The individual selected for the position of Catholic Priest / Chaplain - Associate Coordinator of Catholic Pastoral Services shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules and policies regarding safety and security.

Working Conditions:
The Catholic Priest / Chaplain - Associate Coordinator of Catholic Pastoral Services may encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders while working in a correctional facility and will be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress.  The Catholic Priest/Chaplain - Associate Coordinator of Catholic Pastoral Services may be required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, work alone in an isolated area, be exposed to adverse weather conditions and the ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.        The Catholic Priest/Chaplain - Associate Coordinator of Catholic Pastoral Services w ill be required to work on evenings, weekends and holidays and in situations where emergency notification is needed.

Qualifications:
  • Ordained a Catholic Priest, with Faculties from the Archdiocese of Boston;
  • Strong service orientation;
  • Ability to teach, train, and mentor people in the Catholic faith;
  • Knowledge and love of the Catholic faith and a desire to contribute to the mission of the Church;
  • Commitment to personal spiritual growth;
  • Strong written, communication, organizational and time-management skills and be able to work under pressure on time sensitive projects;
  • Ability to keep accurate records and generate timely reports;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and the ability to use a computer keyboard for up to eight (8) hours per day;
  • Must be flexible and able to learn and perform new duties and skills as assigned and required by the Assistant Superintendent of Program Services or designee;
  • Ability to attend any other training as required by the MSO;
  • Must have own transportation
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.  All applicants must have an active valid driver’s license, the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts and pass a criminal background check.
