Job Description

CDOC - Criminal Investigator IV (Statewide) Join Colorado Department of Corrections as a Criminal Investigator IV, a statewide position open to Colorado residents. The role involves enforcing criminal law, conducting investigations, preparing legal documents, and supporting the department’s mission to build a safer Colorado. Shift work required. Primary posting at Crowley County Correctional Facility, with assignment to additional facilities upon completion of a hiring freeze waiver. Salary range: $70,000 – $90,000 annually. Responsibilities Conduct investigations of offender and employee misconduct, including violations of state statutes, federal laws, and administrative regulations. Investigate Title VII discrimination and sexual‑harassment complaints, use‑of‑force allegations, staff–offender relationships and other significant employee misconduct. Coordinate facility drug interdictions and provide matrix supervision of assigned facility staff. Interview suspects, victims, witnesses, and confidential sources. Independently investigate crimes occurring in a prison facility. Lead or serve as a team leader on field investigations, determining resources, assigning tasks, and directing other investigators and law enforcement officers. Review findings and prepare investigative reports and legal documentation for presentation to appointing authorities and prosecuting agencies. Conduct surveillance and supervise or participate in undercover operations and assist other agencies in CDOC‑related cases and intelligence gathering. Analyze complaints, determine authenticity, and validate for presence of essential elements constituting a crime under Colorado statutes. Write search and arrest affidavits, secure warrants, and execute search warrants. Obtain court orders for collection of non‑testimonial evidence and other related seizures. Inventory and secure items seized during search warrants and routine evidence collection; create exhibits for court proceedings. Testify in court (administrative and personnel hearings, depositions, etc.). Assist other divisions on criminal investigations, fugitive operations, background investigations, interdiction operations, and duties normally assigned to the Special Operations Divisions. Train and lead other OIG staff and field investigators as needed. Assist with K9 investigations and other specialized duties. Required Qualifications Eight (8) years of full‑time professional investigative criminal‑case experience in drug, assault, or fraud investigations, including interviewing suspects, victims, and witnesses, collecting and processing evidence, writing criminal investigation reports, and testifying in hearings and trials. Experience must be detailed in the application. A qualification combination of education, formal apprenticeship, certification, and/or related professional investigative experience equivalent to eight (8) years. Valid, active Colorado Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) certification at application time. A copy of the current POST certificate must be submitted. Minimum age 21 years; possession of a valid driver’s license; high‑school diploma or GED; no felony convictions; and legal eligibility to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications K9 drug investigation experience. Gang‑related investigations. Intelligence gathering or intelligence‑led policing. Multi‑agency investigations. Warrant writing and execution. Drug‑related investigations. Institutional/Detention investigations. Professional Standards or Internal Affairs investigations.
