Position Summary

Provides trauma-informed and culturally inclusive advocacy to survivors and co-survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking. Provides education regarding the Rape Crisis Center services and other pertinent community services as needed.

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree in women’s studies, social work, criminal justice, psychology, or related field required. If no degree, previous experience in victim advocacy or related field required.
  • Maintain valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet agency requirements for driving insurability.
  • Must be able to meet agency requirements for criminal background check (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Federal Bureau of Investigations).

Role and Responsibilities

  • Serves in on-call rotation to respond to hospital requests in Summit and Medina Counties to provide rape crisis center advocacy and support services to survivors of sexual violence, human trafficking, and intimate partner violence.
  • Maintains an individual caseload of clients to provide continued victim or personal advocacy to provide continued emotional support, crisis intervention, and referral information and completes client documentation and statistical information sufficiently in compliance with agency requirements.

  • Conducts needs assessment to identify client needs and collaborate with client to create an individualized goal plan to promote empowerment and decision-making.
  • Provides information on crime victim’s rights and assists survivors and co-survivors with completion of Victim Compensation, VINELink, and other resources as required.

  • Provides victim advocacy services to non-offending caregivers with children who have been sexually abused at the Akron Children’s CARE Center.
  • Provides court advocacy to survivors involved in the justice system including, but not limited to accompaniment to law enforcement interviews, accompaniment to court hearings, and assistance with filing of protection orders.
  • Maintains anonymous/confidential record-keeping for all survivors and co-survivor contacts.

  • Utilizes crisis intervention best practices including safety planning, trauma-informed care, and listening skills to provide compassionate support to all survivors and co-survivors.
  • Completes a minimum of 40-hour training in compliance with OAESV best practices and maintains annual training requirements in compliance with agency policy.
  • Works closely with allied professionals and all victim advocacy agencies to ensure collaboration and cross training while always representing the mission and philosophy of the Rape Crisis Center.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Work environment : This position will be in a facility with victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. In addition to interaction with the survivors, the employee may have interactions with families of these individuals, the assailants and law enforcement.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time; non-exempt
  • Serves in on-call rotation
  • Schedule is flexible - based on client needs and on-call responsibilities. Some evenings, overnights, and weekends required.
