Key Responsibilities:
Shop and Staff Management:
- Lead and supervise a team of mechanics and support staff, managing daily workflow, scheduling, payroll, and addressing employee performance concerns.
- Assign and oversee mechanic duties, ensuring accountability, efficiency, and high-quality outcomes.
- Maintain a structured, professional shop environment.
Fleet Maintenance and Preventative Scheduling:
- Create, maintain, and enforce a detailed preventative maintenance schedule for all buses, vans, and other company vehicles.
- Ensure timely and complete adherence to all scheduled maintenance, minimizing vehicle downtime and maximizing reliability.
- Regularly review and adjust the schedule based on fleet needs and operational priorities.
Inventory and Budget Management:
- Oversee parts inventory, maintaining adequate supplies and managing vendor relationships.
- Control shop expenditures, negotiate competitive pricing, and ensure cost-effective procurement of parts and materials.
- Manage budgets effectively to optimize departmental spending.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure strict compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and FTA regulations through regular vehicle inspections and thorough documentation.
- Coordinate closely with the safety department to reduce incidents and proactively address compliance issues.
- Implement corrective actions promptly to maintain regulatory standards and minimize operational disruptions.
Emergency Response and Flexibility:
- Coordinate rapid responses to unexpected breakdowns or emergency repair needs.
- Occasionally run errands for urgent parts or supplies to keep the fleet operational and minimize downtime.
Reporting and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of all repairs, maintenance tasks, employee schedules, payroll data, and regulatory compliance documentation.
- Generate and deliver regular detailed reports to upper management regarding fleet maintenance status, challenges, and improvement recommendations.
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of direct diesel mechanic experience, specifically with large commercial vehicles (buses preferred).
- A minimum of 1 year in a managerial or supervisory role overseeing fleet maintenance operations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of preventive maintenance scheduling and vehicle diagnostic techniques.
- ASE certifications strongly preferred.
- Valid driver's license required (CDL strongly preferred).

- Demonstrated experience managing teams and effectively handling employee scheduling and payroll.
- Strong negotiation and budgeting skills to control departmental costs.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with fleet management software and other relevant computer applications.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a significant plus.
