Job Description

Hawks Summer Intern

Reports to: Executive Director, Director of Athletics

Department: Hawks Athletic Department

Schedule:

Starting salary: Unpaid Internship

Start Date: July 2025

Job Summary:

The Summer Intern position with the Riverside Hawks is a flexible, hands-on role supporting various aspects of the organization. From assisting with team operations and logistics to contributing to creative projects like social media, interns are expected to take the initiative and offer support where it’s most needed. This position is ideal for someone who is organized, adaptable, and excited to work behind the scenes to help one of New York City’s most respected grassroots basketball programs continue its mission of holistic youth development. Interns will gain exposure to youth sports programming and strategic planning while playing an active role in a community-focused environment.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Creative Direction & Brand Alignment: Ensure that all media reflects Riverside’s core values of Academics, Basketball, and Community. Showcase themes like mentorship, opportunity, and holistic development in the content. Contribute innovative ideas that align with the organization’s voice and amplify its mission.
  • Program Operations & Back-End Support: Assist with day-to-day operations by attending practices, events, and meetings to provide on-site support. Help manage backend logistics, including organizing digital content, maintaining internal schedules, and supporting event preparation. Collaborate with staff to meet evolving program needs as they arise.
  • Social Media Strategy & Execution: Design and lead an Instagram content strategy that elevates Riverside’s brand and reflects its full community impact. Diversify the content by creating and implementing original series (Player Spotlights, Behind-the-Scenes, Alumni Spotlights) with strategic roll-out plans. Manage aspects of content creation such as filming, editing, and scheduling while coordinating with coaches and staff to bring ideas to life.
  • Alumni Engagement & Storytelling: Support the early development of a Riverside Hawks Alumni Network by organizing alumni information, conducting outreach, and featuring stories of former players. Produce digital spotlight features that strengthen connections between generations and reinforce the long-term impact of the program.
  • Community Engagement: Foster strong relationships with players, parents, and community members. Actively participate in community events and outreach efforts to promote the program and its impact, and to encourage community support and involvement.

This opportunity works on the following:

1. Financial Management in a Non-Profit Organization

This session would introduce the fundamentals of how non-profits like Riverside manage their finances. The intern would learn about how annual budgets are created, how various funding sources, such as donations and grants, are tracked, and how to allocate resources effectively across different programs. These insights would help the intern build an understanding of budgeting and financial decision-making, skills that are valuable across a wide range of careers, including non-profits, education, business, sports management, and future leadership roles of any kind.

2. Professional Communication Skills

This session would focus on strengthening professional communication skills, both within the organization and when interacting with families and external partners. Interns would learn how to write professional emails, participate effectively in meetings, and adjust their tone depending on the situation. The session would also cover common communication challenges and how to navigate difficult or sensitive conversations. Developing this skill would help interns build stronger relationships and represent the organization with clarity and confidence.

3. Data & Information Management

This session would focus on helping interns develop strong organizational habits by teaching them how to manage and track information effectively. Using tools like Excel, Google Drive, and Basecamp, interns would learn how to create systems that keep projects clear, accessible, and easy to maintain. These skills would help them stay on top of multiple responsibilities and contribute more consistently to the team’s overall workflow

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in youth development and sports
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Ability to take initiative, manage time independently, and follow through on tasks without heavy oversight
  • Basic experience with video production and social media
  • Ability to be comfortable with juggling multiple responsibilities
  • Strong organizational skills, especially with spreadsheets, calendars, and general planning
  • A flexible, team-first attitude and an interest in supporting young athletes beyond the game
