Histology Supervisor

Job Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and supervise the assigned department; make decisions, resolve issues, document and develop procedures, and participate in meetings.
- Oversee the employee hiring process, including interviewing applicants, developing performance expectations, and identifying key functions, skills, and qualifications for each position.
- Responsible for onboarding new employees, facilitating training, and supporting continuing education efforts.
- Coach, counsel, motivate, and evaluate staff performance on a regular basis; administer disciplinary actions as needed in coordination with Human Resources.
- Continuously monitor lab operations, workflow, and staff, making job duty reassignments or workflow/process adjustments as necessary.
- Collaborate with the histology leadership team to improve workflow, productivity, quality, and efficiency.
- Accurately embed all tissue types while maintaining cleanliness in the embedding area.
- Section paraffin-embedded surgical specimens with precision and maintain cleanliness of the microtome and workstation.
- Perform special stains and prepare necessary staining solutions.
- Ensure proper filing and organization of paraffin blocks and slides.
- Maintain equipment quality control records; clean, change solutions, and properly configure all tissue processors, and demonstrate basic maintenance skills.
- Ensure safe disposal and handling of hazardous materials, including recycling of substances like xylene, reagent alcohol, and formaldehyde.
- Must be proficient in IHC and special stains, including troubleshooting and validating new antibodies.
- Oversee routine maintenance of lab equipment and maintain adequate inventory of supplies.
- Keep required departmental records and reports current.
- Assist with developing and implementing departmental policies and maintain procedure manuals.
- Follow all lab safety practices and comply with established procedures outlined in manuals.
- Perform responsibilities in accordance with industry-standard security practices and applicable regulations to protect confidential health and company data.
