The Summer Nurse Externship is a 10-week program designed for nursing students who have completed one clinical rotation. The program begins with a two-week orientation including both classroom and clinical components, in which the nurse extern performs basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. The Nurse Extern is assigned to a Registered Nurse throughout the Externship to perform basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. Nurse Externs partner with an RN to learn and demonstrate physical assessment skills, and learn and demonstrate routine basic care skills (bathing, safety, and hygiene activities). 

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is an 11-bed unit that operates as a step down from the AICU, as well as the primary admission unit for patients requiring PCU-level care. PCU patients require medical, surgical (both general and neuro), and trauma services. The PCU is a licensed ICU and can take lower-acuity ICU-level patients. Patient care is provided by an interdisciplinary team primarily including providers, registered nurses, patient care technicians, a unit secretary and other specialized consultants. The PCU operates with a team approach, having 1 RN designated as the charge nurse. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

• Nursing student of an accredited Nursing Program and one clinical rotation, or a Graduate Nurse without Boards required.
