Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, the On-Site Spanish/English Medical Interpreter provides accurate interpretation and translation of medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing limited English proficient patients while adhering to the Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters and the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care. Advocates on behalf of LEP families to ensure that they consistently receive professional language/communication services in healthcare encounters.Duties of an On-Site Spanish/English Medical Interpreter include the following but are not limited to: Review daily LEP inpatient report and round on emergency department patients/inpatients to educate patients/families about free language assistance services and how to access and correctly use available resources and obtain feedback related to quality of interpretation. Assist in the education of SBUH staff about language assistance services and how to access and correctly use available resources to ensure effective communication. Perform clear, accurate interpreting services for LEP patients, families and hospital visitors in a professional, warm and friendly manner with the goal of facilitating prompt, unbiased and accurate communication between patients, family members and providers at SBUH while adhering to the Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters and the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care. Maintain a log with the interpretation encounters completed during each shift including rounding and education provided to staff on language services. Demonstrates a commitment to the mission, vision and values of SBUH. Translates general patient/family materials. Assist with auditing charts on units and in EMR as needed to ensure compliancewith Joint Commission and other regulatory offices. Keeps self-current by attending professional meetings, webinars and/or continuing education sessions. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree. At least 3 years of patient facing experience in a Hospital/Healthcare setting or 2 years of Interpreter experience. Completion of a 40 hour or more Medical Interpreter program (please attached copy of completion paperwork to your submission). Demonstrated fluency and proficiency in both English and Spanish. Demonstrated proficiency in Medical Terminology in English and Spanish. Must be a good fit with a positive mindset. Knowledge of EMR. Preferred Qualifications: Medical Interpreter experience. Superior interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Strong critical thinking skills. Fluency in additional foreign languages. Medical Interpreter Certification. Anticipated Pay Range: The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $68,666 - $80,111 / year. The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience.Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
