JOB OVERVIEW

Peer Support Services are recovery-oriented and culturally-competent services provided to individuals and groups delivered by Peer Support Specialist. These services augment the treatment services clients receive by promoting recovery, resiliency, engagement, socialization, self-sufficiency, self-advocacy, development of natural supports and identification of strengths through structured activities such as group and individual coaching designed to set and achieve recovery goals. The Peer Support Specialist works as a member of a multidisciplinary team and provides services in the field and/or in the office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Peer Support Services may be provided with the patient or significant support person(s) and may be provided in a clinical or non-clinical setting. DHCS guidance provided in BHIN 21-075 and BHIN 22-026 indicates that Peer Support Services include the following service components:

  • Peer Support Specialist-led activities and coaching to encourage and motivate beneficiaries to participate in behavioral health treatment
  • Provide a supportive environment where beneficiaries and their families learn coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills to help beneficiaries achieve desired outcomes
  • Share personal recovery story in a manner that promotes recovery, instills hope, and is a benefit to those served while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries per Employee Handbook
  • Act as a role model for wellness and recovery and provide peer support that is mutual and respectful
  • Assist patients in combatting negative self-talk, overcoming fears, and learning how to problem solve
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with agency policy and procedures and Federal laws
  • Exhibit knowledge and support of the philosophy and objectives of the agency
  • Conduct self in a professional manner in areas of dress, language, attitude, and behavior
  • Attend assigned trainings, required staff meetings, and be responsible for continuing education and professional development as part of a commitment to provide quality services
  • Co-facilitates Multi-Family Groups, Client Problem Solving Groups and Child-Family Team Meetings
  • Actively participates in outreach events and outreach presentations
  • Assist treatment team in psychoeducation workshops
  • Maintain a written record of contacts with clients via Exym system (Electronic Health Records)
  • Attend weekly team meetings and attends all-staff meetings and in-service trainings as needed.
  • Support all existing agency policies, principles, and mission
  • Maintain confidentiality in matters of agency operation, personnel, and clients
  • Exercise good judgment in performance of all duties and responsibilities, including maintaining good boundaries and professional conduct
  • Other related duties as assigned and approved by the Supervisor(s)/Manager(s)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Personal experience with receiving behavioral health care, and/or homelessness and/or other social services and support
  • Extensive personal, family and/or professional knowledge of challenges of developing and maintaining a recovery focused lifestyle
  • A stable psychiatric condition of a minimum of 12 months and maintenance of continuous sobriety of 24 months or longer
  • Ability to problem solve and great conflict resolution skills
  • Applicants should possess a positive attitude, an ability to comfortably interact with diverse populations, be energetic and independent, and have a strong desire to learn
  • Strong verbal and writing skills are required. Must be able to document in a clear and concise manner and in accordance with LACDMH and The Whole Child policies and procedures
  • Typing skills and computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong commitment to children and families, and a willingness to take the steps necessary to assure their well-being
  • Ability to work independently and with others – including other employees, clients, and members of the public -- in face-to-face, virtual, and telephonic contexts
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work demands
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints

Preferred

  • Peer support Specialist Certification (if not certified, must obtain within six months of employment)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish). Additional compensation for proven bilingual skills and ability to translate
  • Knowledge of the L.A. County Department of Mental Health system. Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes. Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a shared office space setting. Noise level is moderate.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Uses computer/laptop and other office machinery, (i.e., calculator, copy machine and printer).
  • Constantly converses with staff and clients
