Stage Manager

Full Time/Exempt

General Summary
The Stage Manager is primarily responsible for ensuring that the production of all orchestra events (concerts, rehearsals, tours, run-outs, special events) run smoothly, effectively, and in a financially responsible manner. This includes coordinating and arranging all physical and logistical elements of performances and rehearsals. The Stage Manager works closely with the Director of Operations in the planning and implementation of all orchestra activities.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • In consultation with the Music Director, Director of Operations, and Personnel Manager determines the set up needs to satisfy the staging and equipment requirements for each rehearsal and performance.
  • Designs stage plots for every performance to ensure proper stage set up.
  • Responsible for all aspects of concert stage appearance and equipment adjustments during rehearsals and performances.
  • Call performance and technical cues during applicable concerts and rehearsals.
  • Supervise stagehand(s) and stage assistants to be employed by the Philharmonic and oversee their scheduling and payroll.
  • Responsible for ensuring the physical and safety conditions for optimal performances by the musician and guest artists.
  • Ensure the appropriate safety measures are in place prior to the start of rehearsals or performances, including risers, safety rails, handrails, steps, and sound shields as appropriate to venue.
  • Fulfill guest artist technical rider contract requirements as directed.
  • Maintain appropriate cost controls while keeping high artistic integrity and upholding the master agreement.
  • Oversee the storage, transportation, safety, and use of equipment and instruments owned by the Philharmonic.
  • Schedule and reserve truck rentals for performances and rehearsal according to the master schedule.
  • Arrange for borrowing or rental of needed equipment and instruments.
  • Perform a yearly inventory check of all the Philharmonic’s equipment.
  • Execute safe driving practices to preserve the Philharmonic’s equipment/instruments and to make certain a safe arrival at the projected destination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations or General Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Experience with a symphony orchestra or other non-profit arts presenting organization is preferred.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of technical theater systems including lighting, sound, and staging.
  • Experience managing a stage crew from load-in and set up, to rehearsals, and concerts.
  • Ability to adhere to strict concert timelines and ensure a safe backstage environment.
  • A valid driver’s license and experience driving and operating a 26-foot box truck is essential.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to execute light lifting and transport items medium distances, up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand in one place for extended periods.
  • Able to walk up and down stairs many times over a course of hours.
  • Noise levels in work environment are moderate, but can reach loud decibels during live performances and events.
  • Hours include evenings and weekends.

  • Collaborates: Music Director, General Manager, Orchestra Personnel Manager, Orchestra Librarian

The successful candidate will have a personal commitment to symphonic music, demonstrate the ability to work in a fast paced, high-energy environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously. They will have a strong attention to detail, proven leadership skills and the ability to work independently and make critical decisions. They will be able to demonstrate a willingness to be a team player in a highly collaborative environment.
