Note: BS or MS Degree must be in the field that is being tutored, otherwise pay rate will be at AS level.

JOB SUMMARY

Drop-in writing tutors perform tutoring for a range of college classes in all fields in an ever-changing and sometimes demanding environment (online and face-to-face), all one-on-one with a potential waitlist. Candidates must be comfortable with MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of style. This position reports to the Coordinator, Academic Services and Writing Tutor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Help tutees develop study skills and acclimate to college level coursework
  • Writing tutors meet with students or read submitted papers in order to aid in revision and understanding of assignments. The position has drop-in and email inbox duties
  • Drop-in Writing tutors will maintain and operate the Writing Tutoring forum in Microsoft Teams and meet with students through video chat to discuss papers. Email inbox duties involve annotating assignment drafts in Microsoft Office programs as well as answering email questions
  • Communicate subject matter to tutees in a concise and effective manner
  • Navigate learning obstacles by understanding learning styles and integrating effective study and learning strategies for academic success
  • Develop independent learning by promoting appropriate learning attitudes and behaviors
  • Monitor student understanding and require tutees to participate in sessions
  • Maintain academic integrity by not doing a tutees homework or take-home quizzes/exams
  • Maintain consistent weekly availability in the Academic Center
  • Submit accurate timesheets and all session-related paperwork in a timely manner
  • Maintain excellent responsibility, reliability, punctuality, and professional behavior
  • Attend trainings, participate in professional development as required, and develop a good understanding of college services, support, and online resources
  • Create a welcoming and positive environment that is sensitive to student diversity
  • Potentially greet visitors, students, faculty, and staff; perform reception desk duties
  • Demonstrate above-average creative problem-solving, critical thinking, patience, and decision-making skills
  • Maintain tutor-student confidentiality; uphold college and Academic Center’s mission statements; handle confidential information in compliance with FERPA and Title IX.
  • Use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems
  • Use computers for word processing
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Associate or equivalent credits (60 credits)
  • Extensive coursework in the subject area to be tutored
  • Working knowledge of MLA and APA styles
  • Proficiency with Teams, Outlook, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Must be available for weekend hours
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be positive, cooperative, and supportive

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in English or related field
  • Experience in educational environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work is normally sedentary which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual Acuity/ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand and convey subject matter
  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another
  • Repetitive motion (i.e., keyboarding)

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

College campus and virtually, direct contact with diverse students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common and shared areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms. Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and all College policies.
