While the job requires multi-tasking and can be fast-paced at times, we enjoy the company of those around us and work confidently, knowing that our team is there to support us in our goal to provide excellent care for our patients.A veterinary assistant must be able to perform the following:Lift animals weighing up to 60 pounds.Handle urine, fecal, and blood samples.Assist in radiography. You must be 18 years old per state regulations.Assist in surgery.Duties include the following:Communicate professionally and cheerfully to clientsCommunicate and work together with other staff membersKeep current on hospital protocols and procedures.Attend staff meetings; if absent read the minutes.Daily dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping of the facility.General maintenance and cleaning of the facility.Restock inventory and room supplies. Note items to be re-ordered.LaundryNotice and perform miscellaneous tasks such as changing light bulbs, cleaning the sidewalk and parking lot.Clean cages, feed, and medicate animals under direction of the doctor.Change litter boxes and walk dogs.Assist with or complete maintenance of medical or other equipmentReport activities of hospitalized animals to the doctor and note in the Medical Record.Admit and discharge hospitalized patients.Prepare patients for surgery; monitor anesthesia.Perform dental prophy; position for and take dental radiographs.Take radiographs and submit to radiology consult service as directed by the doctor.Collection and processing of laboratory samples (blood, urine, fecal).Exam Room Duties:Prepare room for patient exam based on presenting reminders/complaints.Weigh patient; obtain temperature.Obtain patient history for visit; review any due or upcoming reminders with the owner.Restrain effectively for exams using low-stress handling methods.Fill prescriptions as ordered by the doctor. Review prescriptions with the owner and address any questions/concerns before the client leaves the hospital.Schedule appointments, including medical progress exams and forward booked annuals.Invoice for patient visits and process payments.Clean rooms between appointments.Credentialed Technicians must be able to perform the above and will also be given additional tasks based on experience.
