Position Title: Copywriter and Media Specialist

Department: Marketing & Public Relations

Reports To: Vice President of Enrollment & Student Success

Status: Salary, Exempt

Date: September 2024

Position Summary :

The Copywriter and Media Coordinator manages proactive and reactive media strategy, developing positive relationships with the media to promote Ohio Dominican University, and all its various programs and events. This position supports the Office of Marketing and Public Relations by developing, writing, editing and producing marketing, promotional, and advertising materials in support of increasing student enrollment and university fundraising. This position is a public-facing role and engages with campus departments, faculty, students, staff, alumni, and other community members.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities :

General

  • Supports all marketing communications programming including media relations, publications, e-marketing, collateral, advertising, website, social media, and community relations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and partners across the university to provide marketing communications strategy, editorial support, and creative guidance.
  • Supports the overall reputation management and strategic communications to interpret the mission of the university in order to foster a climate of public and private support.
  • Manages and executes a comprehensive public relations strategy for the university.
  • Identify and develop compelling print, broadcast, and digital advertisements.
  • Work with vendors and advertising partners to support university marketing initiatives.
  • Attend staff and committee meetings and other university events as required.

Writing

  • Writes, edits, and coordinates the production of marketing and advertising materials for various university offices. Ensures content protects ODU's image and best represents the university's brand.
  • Writes and coordinates production of a variety of university marketing materials for web, print, video, etc.
  • Shared responsibility in content creation for website and social media.
  • Produces a weekly newsletter for the university community, The ODU Weekly.
  • Provides speechwriting assistance to President as needed.

Media Relations

  • Develop and write news releases and media advisories to amplify university messaging, highlight student and faculty research, events, and awards across the university's departments, divisions, and programs.
  • Pitches stories to a wide range of external print and digital media to raise awareness of ODU in the general public.
  • Responds to media inquiries - serves as university spokesperson as needed.
  • Chronicles media coverage.
  • Manages proactive and reactive media strategy, including crisis communications.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, English, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience in the marketing/public relations field.
  • Superior writing, organization, and communication skills, along with experience in digital marketing are required for this position.
  • Proven ability to work well with the media.
  • Adept at, and proven success at pitching stories and achieving media coverage.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in Higher Education preferred.

Communication Skills/Requirements :

Superior communication skills are required for this position. Must be able to communicate effectively with departments and people across the university, with outside agencies, with members of the community, and with other professionals in the field. Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing as to work requirements, work in progress, work completion and status of departmental goals. Strong interpersonal skills combined with the ability to utilize active listening skills to ascertain areas of need, define problems, and determine possible solutions to meet expressed needs is also required. Must be able to demonstrate tact, diplomacy, confidentiality, professionalism and a positive demeanor in performance of all duties.
