Description Summary:
The J.F. Drake Memorial Learning Resources Center (Drake LRC) is seeking applicants for the Curator/State Black Archives Coordinator for the State Black Archives, Research Center, and Museum (SBARCM). Established in 1987 by Alabama State Legislature, the SBARCM is tasked "to encourage greater awareness of the achievements and contributions of African Americans and the role they played in American society and the world, and to provide a better basis for understanding racial and cultural differences." The SBARCM "preserves and holds material on all Alabama African American history, provides research for scholars on African American history and displays African American material to the general public in its museum. It is the one place in the state where all Black History is brought together, sorted, cataloged, and preserved."
Reporting to the Director of the Drake LRC, the Curator is responsible for maintaining and establishing collections that enhance the story of African American society and culture in the state of Alabama. The incumbent will cultivate relationships with the community-at-large and potential donors while strengthening scholarship and research of and about Alabama's African American community both past and present. The successful candidate must possess the minimum qualifications to be considered for this position. The incumbent must be able to physically withstand frequent activities such as sitting, standing, lifting (up to 25 lbs. unassisted), kneeling, and a potentially dusty environment.
Examples of Duties Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- To acquire, preserve, conserve, and maintain physical and digital content related to African American society and culture in the state of Alabama.
- To provide access to SBARCM collections to members of the community at large.
- To promote SBARCM collections through research and interpreting objects and images of African American society and culture from the state of Alabama through one to two exhibitions yearly.
- Pursue and participate in professional development opportunities both local and national.
- Supervise a small team of up to three or four to include staff, student workers/graduate assistants.
- Managing projects with a high level of organization and strong attention to detail.
- Utilize excellent interpersonal skills to work well with colleagues, donors, and visitors of the SBARCM.
- Possess strong research and reference skills and a thorough understanding of U.S. copyright law and fair use.
- Ability to cultivate relationships with community users and potential donors from across the state.
- Actively identify and pursue potential funding sources, grant writing, and reporting.
- Track and maintain museum budget and expenditures with the Director of Drake LRC.
- Secure, coordinate, and install traveling exhibitions to the SBA from other institutions.
Typical Qualifications Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
- Accredited Master's degree in Museum or Archival Studies, History, or Library Science/Library Information Science.
- Three or more years of museum/archives experience with increasing professional responsibility.
- Familiarity or have experience with archives and digital asset management systems, i.e. Islandora, ArchivesSpace, Intuiface, or comparable system.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Accredited Master's degree in African American or Southern Studies.
- Experience working in an academic setting.
- Successful grant writing experience.
- Budget management experience.
- Proficient use in Adobe Creative Suite products (i.e. Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat DC).
- Experience cultivating donor relationships.
