Position Description This is a non-Civil Service position located within the Office of Homeless Services. The Office of Homeless Services (OHS) is dedicated to improving efforts to end homelessness by harnessing local data to shape program and system design using a "systems thinking" approach. The
Peer Support Specialist Coordinator will work alongside and oversee peer specialists while they provide the necessary components of peer work, such as giving recovery-oriented peer services, skill-building, ethical problem solving, optimizing professional growth, and performing administrative duties. The Peer Support Specialist Coordinator will encourage peer support specialists in promoting individuals' choices including becoming more knowledgeable about trauma-informed approaches that reduce or eliminate force and coercion to create a safer environment for all.
Typical Duties - Model self-care, appropriate boundaries, and an authentic belief in recovery through language, attitude, and actions.
- Build trust and develop the integrity of the supervisory relationship with peer support specialists through honest and respectful communication about strengths and areas that need improvement.
- Explore peer support specialists' choices about how they might or might not choose to work with certain individuals, especially if there are issues related to dual relationships or trauma.
- Provide a way to further develop skills for disclosing personal experience with the goals of inspiring hope, developing trust and rapport, and fostering strengths.
- View differences as an opportunity for learning. Refrain from seeing differences as pathology (symptoms); consider "what happened?" rather than "what's wrong?"
- Provide adequate time and space, with coaching and feedback, for peer specialists to become proficient in critical skill.
- Practice effective listening that is non-judgmental and empathic while balancing the need to hold peer support specialists accountable for their job duties.
- Encourage co-learning (collaborative learning) and welcome peer support specialists' input in decision-making wherever possible.
- Encourage peer support specialists to develop meaningful personal, career, and leadership development goals and suggest they use a similar process with those they support.
- Provide guidance to peer support specialists when they are advocating for choice or speaking up when coercion occurs, especially when it is subtle or systemic.
- Provide support in reacclimating recently housed individuals into socializing in their community.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree.
LICENSES REQUIRED Valid Driver License
Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS)

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government. Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Lived experience with homelessness and/or with behavioral health (MH and/or substances) challenges, with demonstrated housing stability of at least two years or more
- In-depth knowledge of peer support services, evidence-based practices, and ethical standards
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication and team-building abilities
- Previous peer mentoring experience with persons experiencing homelessness and/or behavioral health challenges preferred
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in making decisions regarding client needs
- Ability to manage conflict, mitigate/respond to stressful situations and engage traumatic stories
- Ability to understand and maintain professional boundaries
- Ability to listen with care, treat guests with respect and dignity, and respond to each individual's unique needs
- Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) trained
